High-Protein Apple Pie Shake
A little Roots throwback πΏ
This recipe was created before I started documenting my recipes online, so there isn't a photo or video for it yet. But I've made it, loved it, and wanted to share it with you anyway. π€
Basically apple pie in a glass — creamy, cold, cinnamon-y, and packed with protein.
It's perfect when you want something sweet in the afternoon but still want it to actually contribute to your day instead of just being a sugar bomb.
And if you have homemade apple juice or apples from your own kitchen? Even better. π
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsweetened milk of choice
- ½ cup unsweetened apple juice
- ½ cup vanilla Greek yogurt
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
- ½ small apple, peeled and chopped
- 1 tbsp almond butter or peanut butter
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp apple pie spice
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- ½–1 cup ice
- Optional: 1–2 tsp maple syrup or honey, to taste
Optional Topping
- Cinnamon
- Thin apple slices
- Crushed pecans
- A little whipped cream
Instructions
- Add everything to a high-powered blender.
- Blend until completely smooth and creamy.
- Taste and add a little extra cinnamon, maple syrup, or honey if you want it sweeter.
- Pour into a glass and top with cinnamon, apple slices, or crushed pecans.
Pro tip: For an extra thick, almost milkshake-like texture, freeze your apple pieces first.
πͺ My Gym Girlies
This is an easy way to sneak in a solid amount of protein without making your fall drink taste like a protein shake.
For even more protein:
- Use a high-protein Greek yogurt.
- Use your favorite vanilla protein powder.
- Add an extra ½ scoop of protein powder if it fits your macros.
- Use powdered peanut butter instead of regular nut butter if you want to lower the fat.
- Pair it with a real meal or snack if you're using it around your workout.
And please don't feel like every protein recipe needs to taste like chocolate peanut butter. Sometimes we just want apple pie.
πΏ My From-Scratch Girlies
This one is BEAUTIFUL if you've got a little homestead pantry going.
- Use homemade apple juice.
- Use apples from your backyard or local orchard.
- Make your own whole-milk yogurt.
- Use raw honey or homemade maple syrup.
- Make your own vanilla extract.
- Add your own homemade apple pie spice blend.
- If you've got extra apples, make homemade applesauce and use a spoonful in the shake instead of fresh apple.
And if you don't make any of those things yourself? That's okay too. Buying a gallon of apple juice does not disqualify you from being a from-scratch girl. We're building skills, not trying to win a homesteading Olympics.
πΏπͺ For Both Girlies
This is what I love about food like this.
You can care about protein, muscle, strength, and your physique while also caring about homemade food, seasonal ingredients, and a cozy kitchen.
You can drink your apple pie shake after lifting weights and then go make applesauce from the apples sitting on your counter.
You don't have to choose between the gym girl and the from-scratch girl. You can be both. ππͺπΏ
